This is repeated in Malachi:

“And I hated Esau, and laid his mountains and his heritage waste … Whereas Edom saith, We are impoverished, but we will return and build the desolate places; thus saith the Lord of hosts, They shall build, but I will throw down; and they shall call them, The border of wickedness, and, The people against whom the Lord hath indignation for ever” (Mal 1:3-4).

The prophets declared that the descendants of Esau (Edomites and Amalekites) would throw off the yoke of Israel, possess the land of Israel and take the dominion, but the Lord will make a war against them and destroy them out of the land. This is the battle that Ezekiel 38 is referring to and why the Lord says that Gog is the one He has spoken of long before, and that He will have war with from generation to generation:

“Thus saith the Lord God; Art thou he of whom I have spoken in old time by my servants the prophets of Israel, which prophesied in those days many years that I would bring thee against them?” (Ezek 38:17).
